East Street - New shared surface for Horsham’s East Street

New shared surface for Horsham’s East Street

WORK is progressing well on the construction of a new shared surface for Horsham’s East Street.

The 22 week work programme is scheduled to finish in the middle of September and is designed to create an improved area for pedestrians in this now thriving area of the town centre.

The construction work carried out so far means that slightly more than half of the new surface is completed.

Feedback has been positive with traders, with customers and pedestrians liking the new look.

Because the street is very narrow it has been necessary to close the road so that the contractor, Landbuild, can carry out the works safely and maintain pedestrian access to the shops at all times.

A road diversion is in operation and shop deliveries can be made from both ends of East Street.

The new surface was started at the junction with Denne Road and is being 'rolled out' towards the Carfax. It is very much appreciated that the work is inconvenient for some people and the works are moving as quickly as possible.

When the new shared surface opens, the scheme as approved will see traffic will be banned from East Street and Market Square 24 hours a day, seven days a week except for loading and blue badge holders.

Designated bays for loading and unloading and blue badge holders will be introduced in East Street. The new look East Street will not separate cars and pedestrians, but will give priority to pedestrians.

The £400,000 jointly funded project from Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council follows a year long experimental pedestrianisation carried out in East Street in 2008/09.

A celebration event in East Street is being planned for October.

East Street - Quarter Card Rewards Loyal East Street Shoppers

Quarter Card Rewards Loyal East Street Shoppers

The Quarter Card was an idea born as a result of the road improvement scheme that was planned for East Street Horsham as a way of rewarding East Street's loyal customers throughout the period of disruption.

14 Horsham traders got together and came up with the Quarter Card idea which was launched on the weekend of the Horsham Piazza Italia and it has been running successfully since.

Basically, any customer spending £5 or more in any of the fourteen participating businesses has their Quarter Card stamped, and when they have collected 6 stamps, they are entered into a monthly free prize draw.

The prize consists of £200 worth of gift vouchers from a selection of the participating businesses, encouraging the lucky winner to perhaps try one of East Street's varied businesses that they may not have otherwise visited!

Our customers are not restricted to one card, indeed many of East Streets regular customers have completed more than one, giving them even more chance in the Draw!
