There was a wonderful moment just seconds into the world record breaking custard pie fight in Horsham Park on Sunday.
A photographer for the Reuters News Agency thought that he’d outsmarted the kids by wrapping up his expensive camera with a bin liner.
He made no such provisions for himself though, and fell victim to a pie plum in the face, delivered by an eager youngsters who ran and jumped off the assembled hay stacks to give him the required elevation. For this lad it was clearly too good an opportunity to pass up!
The pie fight was a spectacular end and the runaway highlight of the three day Kidz Festival. About 330 children aged to three to 13 throwing nearly 1250 flan cases filled with gooey custard.
Local solicitors Kathryn Hulme, from Rawlison Butler, and Don Burstow were present to ensure that the required legal documentation was produced and witnessed; the management of sponsors Hawkin’s Bazaar had come down from Suffolk; and local and international press and TV were there to record the event for posterity.
One mum later said: “We've just got home from the most fantastic day ever! I have two children who are tired but happy. They both participated in the custard pie event and it was great seeing kids be kids.”
However, the three day event was not a financial success, with organisers citing the recession as a reason behind the lower than expected attendance, and its pricing policy may be reviewed next year.
The event was organised and run by the Rotary Club of Horsham together with Terbell, with help from Horsham District Council.
