The swimmers of Horsham Atlantis Club were so collectively ‘awesome’ at the gala meeting on Saturday that they have almost secured third place in the final league standing.
The club took part in their final round of the Sussex League and produced excellent swims, only just missing out on winning the meeting to Crawley, but comfortably beating Burgess Hill & Haywards Heath B.
One of the Atlantis coaches, Andy Lobley, said: “Atlantis was represented by 36 swimmers and each and every single one of them gave 110%.
“A truly staggering effort meant that when the first update on the current points came through Atlantis and Crawley shared the lead on 77points each.
“By the time we were two thirds of the way through the competition Crawley had opened up a 10 point gap but we were still in touch of the lead and safe in second place a with a solid lead over the Burgess Hill team.
“Our thanks go to the coaches of both the visiting clubs for bringing some great swimmers and contributing to a spectacle of competitive sport performed in the manner sport should be.
“Many times before I have said in these reports that we are a growing club and the fact that both other clubs had almost double the amount of swimmers we had is a testament to the effort and determination our swimmers showed.
“With many of our team swimming up in age groups and many competing in multiple races it makes the challenge tough. Lining up against good swimmers who are fresh to the blocks when you have already swum in several events is a tough call but all of our swimmers without any fuss faced up to the challenge and raised the bar. “
The club must now await the results from the final meet between Crawley, Brighton and East Grinstead to confirm itsfinal league standing but it’s looking likely they will end in third.
Andy added: “We really couldn’t have expected anymore than this and big congratulations to Bill Penny, his team and more importantly to the swimmers.”
