Exchanging Views on Council

Okay, it’s not like seeing Big Ben for the first time, strolling in the Lake District or taking a dip in the hot springs of Bath, but a group of Spanish exchange students recectly enjoyed a visit to Horsham District Council.

Perhaps they were just grateful not to have been sent to Blackpool, or relieved that not all all Brits are like those who these students - who live not too far from Benidorm -  might have previously experienced...

The students, aged 16 to 18, have been visiting the College of Richard Collyer’s in Horsham as part of a student exchange programme taking place between 19 and 25 June 2009.

The students are from Spanish school Instituto Cristobal Lozano in Hellin, close to Alicante on the east coast of Spain. The group started its week in the UK with a visit on 19th June to Horsham District Council’s Chamber as part of the students’ education to find out about how local government works in different countries.

The Chairman of the Council, Cllr Keith Wilkins, welcomed the group and led a special presentation given to the visitors.

Ms Margarita Mortimer, Head of Spanish Studies at Collyer’s College in Horsham, said: “The Collyer’s students and their families have been very accommodating. Visiting Horsham Council and being welcomed by the Chairman have been a real experience.”

Carlos Berropte, accompanying teacher for the Spanish students, added: “We would like to thank the council and Collyer’s for welcoming us so warmly.  We have been coming to Horsham and the District Council for five years now and it’s always been a pleasure.”

The students are continuing their educational week with visits to the Horsham Museum, Brighton and the Houses of Parliament as well as spending time with students and their families.
