London and the South East were on Level 3 of four for the first time since June 2006, with temperatures reaching 33C (91.4F).
If you’re suffering with the heat, don’t head to Timbuktu, Mali, or Madras, India, on your holidays, as temperatures reached a searing 42 (107.6F) on Wednesday. Madrid and Miami were also hot (35c/95F) although Britain was hotter than cities such as Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Los Angeles and Paris.
