The School of Pop

As schools go, Tanbridge House is a colourful place to learn.

The corridors all around the school are decorated with hundreds of students’ work, and even the office of head teacher Jules White features dramatic images from the art department.

Currently inside the head’s office are two large Pop Art canvas images, created as part of the GCSE coursework by Year 10 and 11 students.

“It usually doesn’t take long for a student to hear that I have a picture of theirs up in my office and most drop by to have a look!” he said.

The Pop Art work has so impressed staff at the school that the majority will  be on display at a Tanbridge Goes Pop exhibition at the Capitol in Horsham. The exhibition started on Wednesday and runs until Monday 11th January 2010.

Students have developed colourful canvases and sketchbooks by studying the 1960's British and American Pop Art movement.

Using the theme 'Icons and Idols' or 'Colour' the students researched many works including those of Peter Blake, Peter Philips, Richard Hamilton, Eduardo Paolozzi, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Some students used modern day stars such as Lady Ga Ga and pop band McFly, while others stayed true to the original icons - Audrey Hepburn is the subject of one Warhol-inspired piece.

The acrylic paintings were completed by students as part of their exam in April.
