The price of parking in Horsham is to sneak up in February after the council reviewed tariffs at car parks.
Horsham District Council reviews car parking every year and is continuing with a comprehensive, two phase review of its town centre car parks.
The first phase has reviewed the new tariffs and charges and the proposals will be implemented on 1st February next year.
It is proposed that a linear tariff of 80p per hour is introduced, with some exceptions, for example The Forum car park would remain 70p per hour, as the car park is often underused.
There would also be a flat fee of £1 for the first three hour period at Hurst Road car park. Other pricing changes are also proposed.
The second phase will look at more detailed strategic, operational and technical issues and will also include the Hop Oast Park and Ride facility, near Horsham.
The Council has commissioned specialist consultants, Town Centre Parking Limited, to assist with both stages of the review.
Speaking of the work, Cllr Roger Arthur, Cabinet Member for Operational services at Horsham District Council, said: “The car parks represent an important strategic and financial asset for the Council and town.
“The effective and efficient operation of the car parks is important to the economic wellbeing of the town centre and the review will seek to ensure that they continue to provide a quality service for all town users.
“Any additional revenue generated by the increases in charges and tariffs will help the Council achieve its objectives as set out in the Mid Term Financial Strategy and will help facilitate improvements in the security and ambience in the car parks.”
A report on the subject will be discussed at Horsham District Council’s next council meeting on 16th December.
Should the report be approved, the second phase review will start early in the New Year and is expected to take six months to complete. The Council will undertake a comprehensive consultation exercise as part of this project including major stakeholders in Horsham town centre.
