South Street was one of the original four Streets that met at Carfax (the others being North Street, East Street, and West Street). At this time, South Street ran all the way to St Mary’s Church.

In the sixteenth century, the section from (what is now called) Market Square to the Church was renamed the "Causeway.” As a result, the present-day South Street is now much shorter than its original length.
