In the town centre: Dozens of independent restaurants, cafes, pubs and takeaways sit within a few streets of the medieval Carfax. Chak De India, set inside the town's former King's and Barnes Brewery building on the Bishopric, and Horsham Tandoori on East Street - family-run since 2012 - are among the standout choices for Indian cuisine, while traditional pubs remain at the heart of the town, from The Black Jug on North Street to Piries Bar, a 16th-century oak-beamed bar tucked down an alley just off the Carfax pouring real ales and an ever-changing line-up of gins. Wine lovers can call in at The Horsham Cellar, an independent wine and spirit merchant on the Carfax since 2018, and Horsham Sports Club - a five-minute walk from the centre - offers a more relaxed spot for food and drink with a view over Denne Hill.

Further afield: Venture into the wider district and Horsham becomes a genuine hub for fine dining and English wine. Restaurant Interlude at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, Lower Beeding, holds a Michelin star and builds its ever-changing menu around produce grown in the estate's own gardens - a rare distinction this close to Horsham. Nearby, Leonardslee Wine Estate has turned part of its Mannings Heath golf course into a working vineyard, with its own Tasting Room open for wine flights overlooking the vines, while House Coren, a family-run vineyard near Billingshurst, planted 30,000 vines in 2020 and now produces its own Boco Brut and Boco Rosé sparkling wines. Cabin Pressure Spirits distils gin and rum in the village of Plummers Plain, and traditional pubs such as Bax Castle in Southwater are well worth the drive.
