The REC Rooms

March 1, 2019 | 7 p.m.

The REC Rooms Comedy team are proud to present a fantastic line up for March 2019:

Headliner - Mitch Benn
Mitch Benn started his career in Edinburgh in 1994, and was voted best new comic at the 1995 Glastonbury festival; scooping the Comedian Of The Year at The Leicester Comedy Festival three years later.
He's now an established face on the comedy circuit, a regular on both Radio 4's Now Show and Radio 2's It's Been A Bad Week, and star of his own Radio 4 series Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music, which he performed with his regular backing band, The Distractions (Kirsty Newton on bass and keyboards and Tash Baylis on drums and percussion).

He has performed hour-long shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1997, 1998 and 1999, in the revue show The Bootleg Bootleg Beatles in 1998 and the showcase Carlton Comedy Warehouse in 1999, which the subject of a documentary series for Carlton TV.

He returned with the Distractions in 2003, and they released their debut single, Everything Sounds Like Coldplay Now in 2005.

Opener - George Egg
Following two sell out years in a row at the Edinburgh Fringe with his first show ANARCHIST COOK, award winning comedian George Egg returned to Edinburgh this August with his BRAND NEW SHOW demonstrating more ingenious live cooking and laugh-out-loud stand-up comedy and sold out the entire run once again.

George‘s doctor has demanded he must rethink his diet so his family have banned him from using the kitchen. They’ve sent him to the shed. But George simply has to keep cooking and this unstoppable urge leads to inventive creations, innovative solutions and some seriously tasty food.

Funny, inspiring and absurd in equal measure, it’s a cross-genre show as much a stand-up comedy set as an illustrated lecture. Expect power tools, gardening equipment and office supplies to be re-purposed and abused. Expect laughs. Expect to learn something new. And expect to taste the food at the end.

Middle Set - Athena Kugblenu

Athena has been performing stand-up comedy since Spring 2012. A 2015 BBC New Comedian of the Year finalist, Athena is a comedian with intelligent, thought-provoking jokes that still have an edgy sting. This year, she took her second solo show, KMT, to Edinburgh Fringe to 4 and 5 star reviews. By invitation she’s written for BBC Radio 4 (News Quiz) , performed on BBC Radio Scotland (Funny Kind of World), guests on BBC Five Live and will be performing at the Johannesburg Comedy Festival. Her unscripted wit hasn’t gone unnoticed; in 2016 she featured in a BBC3 Future Films production, was invited by internet super producers Astronauts Wanted to guest in their series Girl on Girl and asked by the Pool to contribute her take on the question ‘Can men be funny?‘ She also had a lot to say in The Pool’s ever popular Kitchen Table podcast.

Open Spot - Aaron Levene

Likeable, playful, self depreciating, dark story teller, Aaron Levene (Twice Jewish Comedian of the Year Finalist, Bath New Act finalist 2016), is a Buddhist Jew, whose life story is so densely strange that he had no choice but to find a way to turn it into comedy.

Compere - Geoff Whiting
