Strong Words: Poems For Our Times
Hosted by Akila Richards, this lively line-up of poets will bring you writing that will appease and unease you, comfort and stir you.
Grace Nichols has written widely for both adults and children. Her first collection of poetry, I Is A Long-Memoried Woman won the 1983 Commonwealth Poetry Prize. Among her other books are the popular The Fat Black Woman’s Poems, Sunris - winner of the Guyana Poetry Prize, I Have Crossed an Ocean and Picasso, I Want My Face Back, inspired by her residency at the Tate Gallery, London 1999 -2000. She is among the poets on the current GCSE syllabus and received the Cholmondeley Award in 2000, as well as an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Hull. Her latest adult book is The Insomnia Poems (Bloodaxe 2017).
Sea Sharp (they/them) is a Pushcart Prize winner, Hammer and Tongue poetry slam finalist and their book, “The Swagger of Dorothy Gale & Other Filthy Ways to Strut” was awarded the Prairie Seed Poetry Prize in 2017. This year Sea was a recipient of the LIT UP Publishing and Mentoring Scheme (Waterloo Press) and also the ‘Artist in Residence’ for Marlborough Theatre’s Artist Development Opportunity. www.seathepoet.com
Akila Richards is a published and award-winning writer and poet and has read inter/nationally. She collaborates in film, theatre and digital and visual art. Her short story Secret Chamber was adapted into a theatre play in 2017. Peepal Tree Press published her poems in the Filigree anthology in 2018. Akila’s portfolio includes programming and managing creative projects that benefit diasporic creative communities, including ‘Africa Beyond’ at Southbank, Refugee Week in Brighton, Lit Up Mentoring/Publishing Scheme for Waterloo Press and the Mboka Literature Festival 2019.
