Here is Alba Plumbing's story:

In 2006 Ray was a baggage handler at Gatwick airport and wanted a career change and decided to re-train as a plumber. Ray worked an incredible amount of overtime at the airport to raise the funds of £10,500.00 to pay for the plumbing course. There were days when he worked three to four days at the airport. His days could be as long as 14-18 hour shifts often at night in to the early hours.

I (Claire his other half) used to pack him up with food and clothes and he slept in the car to save the two hour round trip to get home; I would then turn up a few days later with more clean clothes and food and we would swap dirty clothes and empty Tupperware boxes. I was known to friends and neighbours as the ‘Gatwick widow’.

When Ray had raised the money, he did then swap shifts to accommodate the course and pass his exams. We thought that once Ray had passed his exams, he would get some experience with a plumbing firm but the ‘credit crunch’ hit and no-one was hiring.

In October 2010 we took the bold move to start our own business, Alba Plumbing; my parents owed their own business and I had grown up and worked within it, so had some knowledge on how to do this. Once again Ray worked his days off round his shifts to fit in plumbing work; I remember on his last day at Gatwick, we stood in the staff car park for a good thirty minutes with his airport ID and his uniform in bags still deliberating if we were doing the right thing.

We are now 9 years on, and when we set out we wanted to be transparent and honest with customers on the costs so they knew exactly what we had done, the trades industry can have a notorious reputation and we didn’t want that. You may wonder where ‘Alba’ comes from, Ray is originally from Scotland (Glasgow) and Alba is Gaelic for Scotland.

So for new boilers, boiler servicing, new radiators, leaky taps, or bathroom installations get in touch we provide free estimates and will be more than happy to help.
