The Black Jug

The Black Jug

About The Black Jug:

The Black Jug has been pouring pints on North Street since early Victorian times, which makes it one of Horsham’s longest-serving pubs.

The pub was renamed in the late 1800s. Robert Hurst MP had bought Park House next door, and the family put up their coat of arms, so for a while the pub was known as The Hurst Arms. The original building later burned down. It was rebuilt in the 1930s as the double-gabled building that stands today.

Inside, the pub has the wood panelling and bare wooden floors typical of the Edwardian era. The new owners have added their own touches: shelves of books, old furniture and plenty of cosy corners. When they took over the Jug, they lowered the windows to let in more light and moved the kitchen downstairs. They also covered part of the back courtyard to make a bright conservatory. The rest of the courtyard is still open to the sky, so it’s ready for a sunny afternoon.

Close to the station and the town’s offices, the Jug is now a favourite with locals, commuters and visitors. The name has changed, and the building has been rebuilt, but it’s still the same welcoming local it always was.
