Horsham Museum to close temporarily for essential roof repairs

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery will be closed from Monday 7 September 2026 until Tuesday 5 January 2027 to allow essential repairs to its historic roof.
The work follows the appointment of specialist contractors in August 2026 to assess and repair areas of the historic roof where sections of the stonework have deteriorated.
As a Grade II* listed building, with parts dating back to the 15th century, the Museum requires specialist conservation work to protect its historic fabric. The project will involve repairs across a significant section of the roof, making the galleries beneath inaccessible during the works.
To ensure their protection, artefacts displayed in the affected areas will be carefully relocated to secure storage and exhibition spaces elsewhere within the Museum.
Horsham District Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Mark Baynham said:
“We are sorry that the Museum will need to close temporarily and appreciate that many visitors will be disappointed.
"However, these repairs are vital to protect our visitors, staff, collections and this important historic building. The project will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the Museum's construction and help ensure it can continue serving the community for generations to come."
"We hope visitors will understand the need for this work and look forward to welcoming them back in the New Year with an exciting programme of exhibitions and activities. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to follow our progress through the Museum blog."
While the Museum is closed, the team will also refurbish three galleries as part of a wider programme of improvements. Visitors can look forward to a new costume gallery, a refreshed Age of Discovery gallery showcasing stories from Horsham in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a new introductory space when the Museum reopens.
The Museum will hold Christmas shopping events during the closure period on Wednesdays and Saturdays in December, with further details to be announced.
